Primus Live @ The Palais Theatre, Melbourne

Word amongst fellow photographers Australia wide was the lighting was a real challenge for the current Primus tour. Had I fully known how challenging, I would not have applied for this gig. But, I was already booked in and was not going to back out last minute. The show started the huge background screens seemed to be the main source of light creating nice crisp silhouettes of the band. Most if not all of these resultant shots are garbage bar […]

Robert Plant Live @ The Palais, Melbourne

It’s not every day one gets the opportunity to photograph Robert Plant. For mine, there is none bigger than any member of Led Zeppelin so getting the chance to photograph such a legend – I jumped at the chance. With two sold-out shows at the gorgeous Palais Theatre in St Kilda, my home and a mere walk away to get to the venue made it all even sweeter. I arrived at the venue an hour before showtime and I was […]

Download Festival 2018

With the inaugural Download Festival finally upon us, the weather gods were not kind to the plethora of Melbourne Metal fans heading to the festival. It threatened to be an absolute blow out of Noah’s ark proportions but by noon the ponchos were being put away and sun-screen was well in order. In typical Melbourne fashion, the weather changed suddenly and for the most part, we had a relatively dry day. Go figure! The downpour that greeted punters that arrived […]

Overkill & Harlott Live @ 170 Russell, Melbourne

Even if I had done some promo photography for the Harlott guys a couple of years ago, tonight was my first viewing of them in a live environment. There is a reason why these guys are signed to the prestigious Metal Blade label. (Hi Brian!) They know Thrash. Pure Thrash! They know it well and all its nuances. Which is not what you can say about a lot of their contemporaries. They were absolutely phenomenal tonight. Along with Desecrator last […]

Venom Inc & Desecrator Live @ Max Watts, Melbourne

Ave Satanas! Venom are one of those bands one thought they would never see in their lifetime in Australia. And I guess we pretty much haven’t but we were privy to seeing the next best thing and that’s Venom Inc. Featuring two past original members of the classic era Venom (Abbadon and Mantas), Venom Inc. have pretty much picked things up where the Cronos led trio left things off. Now let by Demolition Man aka Tony Dolan, Venom Inc have […]

Foo Fighters Live @ Etihad Stadium, Melbourne

There is a reason (or two) why the Foo Fighters rank as one of the biggest, if not THE biggest rock band in the world. Actually, there were over 48,000 reasons jam packed into an almost full-house Etihad Stadium this night that the Foos came to take Melbourne. I can’t say I am a fan of the band, but I do have a passing interest in some of the stuff the band has released over the years. You are guaranteed […]

Mayhem Live @ Max Watts, Melbourne

Personally, it is always a good omen when the year’s gig circuit begins with a Black Metal classic! And this one boys and girls, was as classic and BLACK as it can get. With a sold-out crowd at Melbourne’s Max Watts, you could tell the night was brewing something special from early on! In fact, most of these Black Metal flavoured gigs usually do! As tired as I was, it felt great being back in the pit again tonight. Said […]

Malcolm Young Graffiti

Bad Boy Boogie – Malcolm Young RIP

The Rock world was saddened this past weekend with the death of AC/DC founder and stalwart Malcolm Young. Malcolm has been absent from his AC/DC duties over the last four years or so due to a series of health complaints and the dreaded dementia. It all took its toll this weekend with his unfortunate passing at the age of 64. Although his death does not come as a surprise, it certainly remains a shock to the vast majority of Rock […]

The Tea Party Live @ The Forum, Melbourne

Army Ants Let me state from the outset, I’m not really a fan of The Tea Party. Lots of respect their way, but if I want to listen to Zeppelin, I’ll listen to Zeppelin. But… man oh man, what a phenomenal sound these guys generate. Absolutely stunning and a better sounding Les Paul you are likely not to hear. Safe to say, they won me over tonight. With an early start at Melbourne’s beautiful Forum, the band played two sets. […]

You Can Shoot Me Anytime, Just Don’t Shoot Me In The Back

The King Of Fitzroy I first stumbled onto Fitzroy fixture and poet Grant Mccracken sometime in 2007. Ten years ago. Possibly earlier. I would constantly peruse the streets of Melbourne learning photography. I would spend hours each and every weekend just going through long walks in the city photographing everything in sight. I was photographically young, naïve and inexperienced but I had a passion for photography that was undying. One sunny day, I spotted Grant sitting amongst three other fellows […]
